Loan interest rates are usually quoted as a single annual percentage, which makes them easy to compare and surprisingly hard to feel. Is 21% much worse than 20%? On its own, the number doesnโt say. Converted into an EMI and a total repayment figure, it does.
That conversion is what a calculator is for, and itโs worth understanding what happens inside one before you trust its output. Prefr, which connects borrowers with RBI-registered NBFC partners, quotes rates between 18% and 30% a year, so all the worked examples below sit comfortably inside that band.
How the EMI is worked out
Every personal loan interest rate calculator runs the same formula:
โEMI = P ร r ร (1 + r)^n รท [(1 + r)^n โ 1]โ
P is the loan amount, r is the monthly rate (the annual rate divided by 12, as a decimal), and n is the number of months. Youโll rarely need to do it by hand. Whatโs useful is knowing what goes in, because that tells you what the result can and canโt show.
Take โน2 lakh at 20% a year over 24 months. The EMI comes to โน10,179. In the first month, โน3,333 of that is interest and only โน6,846 goes to principal. The split shifts every month after that, and by the final EMI almost all of it is principal. This is the reducing-balance method that regulated lenders normally use: interest is charged only on what you still owe.
Tenure changes more than the EMI
Run the same โน2 lakh at 20% through a personal loan interest calculator at different tenures and the trade-off becomes obvious:
| Tenure | Monthly EMI | Total interest |
| 12 months | โน18,527 | โน22,323 |
| 24 months | โน10,179 | โน44,300 |
| 36 months | โน7,433 | โน67,578 |
| 48 months | โน6,086 | โน92,131 |
Stretching from 12 months to 48 cuts the EMI by about two-thirds. It also multiplies the interest by roughly four. Neither end is automatically right. The sensible choice is usually the shortest tenure whose EMI youโd still manage in a month when something unexpected lands on you at the same time. Once you have a tenure in mind, an eligibility check in the Prefr cash loan app on Android or iOS, tells you whether you qualify before any formal application.
What one percentage point is worth
Borrowers comparing loan interest rates often accept one a point or two higher than they could have got, on the grounds that the difference looks small. On โน3 lakh over 36 months, moving from 20% to 21% adds โน154 to the EMI. That does look small. Across the full tenure, though, it adds โน5,524 in interest, which is money youโd otherwise keep.
Thatโs the case for spending a few weeks on your credit profile before applying, if the expense can wait. Paying card balances below about 30% of your limit, clearing a small loan thatโs almost finished, and fixing errors on your credit report can all move the rate youโre offered. A personal loan interest calculator makes the payoff concrete: put in the rate you expect now and the rate you might get after a cleaner report, and look at the gap in total interest.
What the calculator leaves out
A standard EMI calculator takes three inputs: amount, rate and tenure. It doesnโt know about the processing fee, and thatโs a real gap.
The fee and GST are deducted before the money reaches you, while EMIs are calculated on the full sanctioned amount. So the loan costs more than the calculator suggests, and you receive less than you borrowed. RBI addresses this by requiring lenders to state the APR, which includes the fee, in the Key Fact Statement. On โน5 lakh at 18% over 18 months with a โน15,000 fee plus GST, the APR is 25.4%, and โน4,82,300 is credited against EMIs calculated on โน5,00,000.
Use the calculator to plan the EMI and choose a tenure. Use the APR to compare offers, since quoted personal loan interest rates leave the fee out. Prefrโs app shows the Key Fact Statement with the APR before you accept, and its website has an EMI calculator for the planning stage.
Where Prefrโs rates site
Prefr works with RBI-registered lending partners including Aditya Birla Capital, Poonawalla Fincorp and SMFG India Credit. Which rate youโre offered within its band depends on your credit score, existing EMIs and income stability.
| Detail | Terms |
| Interest rate | 18% to 30% per annum |
| Loan amount | Anywhere from โน51,000 up to โน5 lakh |
| Tenure | 6 to 60 months |
| Foreclosure charge | Up to 5%, set by the lending partner, and nil on some loans |
| Basic eligibility | Aged 21โ55, monthly take-home of โน15,000 or more, score of 650 and above |
The decision comes back instantly. Money typically follows inside 30 minutes, with a minority of partners needing up to 24 hours. Current loan interest rates, along with eligibility criteria, are listed on Prefrโs personal loan page.
In short
Check the rate, then turn it into rupees. A calculator shows you the EMI and the total interest at any tenure; the APR in the Key Fact Statement shows you what the loan actually costs once fees are counted.
